For those who live in the Boston area, my department and college are hosting several history
lectures in the fall. Our history and English departments are exploring Boston and New England themes from the colonial era to the period of the Early Republic. Plenty of early American action in this neck of the woods. (For example, check out the fall activities at the Paul Revere House and the series of lectures at Old South Church, the Harvard Book Store, and the Massachusetts Historical Society.)In the past, with the aid of an assistant, I've created a list of area lectures in history, religion, the arts, and more. I require students to get plugged into the cultural opportunities of the city. It's a nice way to broaden out the curriculum. It's almost always a plus for students, who remark favorably about it on course evaluations.
